Smith, Vera Ray

 

Vera Ray (Eustace) Smith, a resident of Roslindale since 1952, died Saturday, August 30th, 2008 at the Mass General Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.  She was 97.  Vera was born in Codroy, Newfoundland, Canada on June 25, 1911 to John Henry and Marcella (Gallop) Eustace.  She grew up in Canada and moved to the United States in 1930.   She studied nursing at the Cambridge Hospital Training School and then served in the US Army Nurse Corp as a Lieutenant during World War Two.  Vera worked for 25 years as a registered nurse at the Mass General Hospital in Boston until her retirement in 1976.  She was a member of the Mount Auburn Alumni Association and active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in West Roxbury.  She was the wife of the late Richard S. Smith and sister of the late E. Carter Eustace, Cyrus Eustace, Mansell Eustace, Mina Anderson and Patricia E. Shano.  Vera is survived by her son Richard Bruce Smith of Roslindale; her daughter, Barbara Rae Nagle of Woodhaven, Michigan; her sister, Margaret E. Malloy of Delta, British Columbia, Canada; as well as 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  Visiting hours were held Wednesday, Sept 3rd from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.  Vera’s Funeral was held Thursday, Sept 4th at 11 AM at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 21 Stratford Street, West Roxbury, MA, 02132 followed by burial with military honors at Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston.  In lieu of flowers donations to Emmanuel Episcopal Church (address above) or to the Veteran’s Charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Weeks, General J. Jr.

 

General Jewel Weeks Jr., a resident of Dedham for over 45 years, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at Highgate Manor Nursing Home in Dedham.  He was 73.  General was born in Floyd, VA  a son of the late General J., and Gazelle (Robertson) Weeks.  He served in the US Navy on the USS Salem and was the recipient of the Navy Occupation Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.  He was employed at the Coca Cola Plant in Needham as a fleet maintenance supervisor for many years.  General was a member of Jacob Jones VFW Post 2017 of Dedham and served on their Honor Guard for 30 years.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 18 of Dedham, District Director of the Blinded Veterans Association, Past President and Treasurer of the Massachusetts Regional Group, and the Treasurer for the Dedham Commission for Disabilities.  General is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sheila A. (Drake); two sons, Donald E., and his wife Brenda Weeks of Auburn, Maine, and Robert J., and his wife Suzy Weeks of Dedham; his daughter Mary E., and her husband Richard Czyras of Canton; his grandchildren, Eric Weeks of Auburn, Maine, William Weeks, Julie Anne Czyras, and Tyler Czyras; three brothers, Clyde Weeks of Chicago, Illinois, Carl Weeks of Fredericks- burg, Virginia, and Allen Weeks of Floyd, Virginia; and two sisters, Velva Weeks of Rockville, MD and Donna Russell of Rockville, MD.  He was the father of the late Julie Weeks, and the brother of the late Richard Weeks.  General will also be missed by his guide dog and companion Brady.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, September 2nd from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham.  His funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Lukes Lutheran Church, 950 East St, Dedham, MA, 02026.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree.  Donations to St. Lukes Lutheran Church (address above) or to the VNA Hospice, 175 Highland Avenue, Needham MA 02494 would be appreciated.
