Anderson, James

James H. “Jimmy” Anderson, a lifelong resident of Dedham, died Thursday, January 29th, 2009 at his home in Dedham after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was 53.  Jimmy was born in Boston, MA on June 14, 1955 the only son of the late Henry Clarence and Marguerite Irene (Burns) Anderson.  He served in the US Army, and worked as a laborer for the State Highway Department for 18 years before working for the Department of Public Works in Dedham for six years.  He is survived by his sister Marguerite “Peggy” Saegh and her husband Dewey of South Walpole, his twin sister Jean, and her husband Kenny McLeish of Dedham, his nephew Scott, and his wife Joni Saegh of Wrentham, and his best friend Tommy Bryan of Westwood.  He was the uncle of the late Brian Saegh.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday, February 1st from 1-5 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home Monday at 8 AM and proceed to St. Mary’s Church, 420 High Street, Dedham for his Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o clock.  Burial will follow in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.  Donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Bilyard, Liane

Liane Mary (Wolseley) Bilyard, a West Roxbury resident for 25 years, died Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 at the Faulkner Hospital in Boston.  She was 73.  Liane was born June 8, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Walter H., and Alice (Reardon) Wolseley.  She worked for Senior Healthcare of Watertown as a home healthcare worker.  She also enjoyed bingo and bowled in a league.  She is survived by two sisters, Florence Muccio of Stoneham, and Maureen Alberico of Tewksbury; and two brothers, Walter H. Wolseley  and Robert Wolseley, both of West Roxbury.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday, January 29th from 11-1 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury at 1:30 PM.

Johnstone, Richard C.

Richard Carlton Johnstone, a resident of Nashua, New Hampshire for the past 14 years, and formerly of Walpole, and Dedham, died Saturday, January 24th, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire.  He was 86.  Dick was born August 13, 1922 in Waltham, Massachusetts, the only child of James and Erna (Bergesen) Johnstone.  He grew up in Waltham and graduated from Waltham High School with the Class of 1940.  He was the captain of the football team at Waltham High and later was elected to the Waltham High School Football Hall of Fame.  Dick graduated from Bowdoin College where he was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and where he was the captain of both the football and baseball teams.  He was the All State Quarterback at Bowdoin in 1942.  Dick was also proud of the fact that he served for 10 consecutive years as the President of his Class, starting in Junior High School and continuing through High School and College.  In August of 1942 he entered the United States Marine Corps and began active service on August 11, 1943.  He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the Secretary of the Navy on behalf of the President.  His citation reads “For heroic achievement as a Mortar Section Leader and later as an an Acting Assault Platoon Leader of the Third Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, Fifth Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February, to 23 March 1945.  When the leader of an assault platoon was killed during an attack on 13 March and the platoon became badly disorganized, Second Lieutenant Johnstone reorganized the men into an efficient fighting unit and immediately pushed forward in a successful attack upon a series of stubbornly defended and mutually supported cave positions.  On 17 March, after a reorganization of the battalion, he again volunteered to lead a new platoon in an attack against the last pocket of enemy resistance on the Island.  By his courageous fighting spirit and devotion to duty throughout, he contributed materially to the success of his Battalion during the operation and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”  Dick ended his active service with the Marines on June 21, 1946 and was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps Reserve s a 1st Lieutenant on October 19, 1949.  After World War Two he worked for the New England Telephone Company for 40 years, rising to the position of Division Sales Manager.  He retired in 1987.  Dick was an active member of the Allin Congregational Church in Dedham, where he served in several capacities including Sunday School Teacher, Church Deacon, and Chairman of the Stewardship Committee.  He was also a member of the Bowdoin Club of Boston, a former member of the Winchester Rotary Club, a Corporator of the Dedham Institute of Savings, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.  He and his wife enjoyed twenty-seven years of retirement in Nashua, New Hampshire, and Siesta Key, Florida.  Dick was known for his friendly and outgoing personality, sense of humor, and loyal friendship by his many friends and business associates.  A loving family man, Dick’s gentle and supportive nature will be sorely missed by his beloved wife, Marion (whom he began dating when they were both thirteen, and to whom he was married for sixty four years); his daughter Jo Ann, and her husband Larrry Vitali of Nashua, New Hampshire; his son, Rick, and his wife Kathy Johnstone of Merrimac, New Hampshire; his grandchildren, Lauren, and her husband Sasha Sobol, Steve, and his wife Susanna Vitali, and Jeff Johnstone; and his great grandchildren Ela and Alex Sobol, and Anna Vitali.  He was the father of the late Rob Johnstone.  Dick, Dad, Bumpa; we all miss you so very much.  Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, January 28th from 6-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Dick’s funeral will be held Thursday at 11 AM at the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High Street, Dedham.  Private interment will be in Mt Feake Cemetery in Waltham.

Ferguson, Christine E.

Christine E. Ferguson, a resident of Roslindale, died at her home on Thursday, January 15th, 2008.  She was 94.  Miss Ferguson was born May 4, 1914 in Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Katherine (Macuspic) Ferguson.  She worked as a secretary for Metropolitan Life Insurance Comapny, formerly New England Life Insurance Company.  Christine is survived by her dear sister Sally Alborghetti, and her husband Peter, of Dedham, and was the sister of the late John and Duncan Ferguson.  She is also survived by her nieces Susan Alborghetti of Roslindale and Paula Alborghetti of Dedham, and her nephews David Alborghetti of Randolph, and Stephen Alborghetti, and his wife Marie, of Pelham, NH, as well as her twin grandnephews, Peter and Nicholas Alborghetti of Pelham, NH.  Christine was a member of the Senior Citizens of Roslindale, and she liked to travel.  She was very devoted to her family, and cared for her mother and her brothers through their illnesses.  She was an avid animal lover, she enjoyed cooking, and she was a generous supporter of various charities.  Christine’s funeral will be held Wednesday, January 21st, 2008 at 11 AM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham followed by burial in Mout Hope Cemetery in Boston.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA), 350 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130, or to the Animal Rescue League, 55 Anna’s Place, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.

Berglund, George A.

George Albert Berglund, a resident of Jamestown, Rhode Island for the past 11 years, and formerly of Westwood for 37 years, died Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 at his home in Jamestown, Rhode Island.  He was 89.  George was born December 3, 1919 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the son of the late John W. and Alice F. (Graham) Berglund, and grew up in Roslindale.  He was a graduate of Hyde Park High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston.  George served in the Army Air Corps as a Ist Lieutenant during World War Two.  He was a fighter pilot, flying a P-47 with the 57th Fighter Group on 110 sorties from bases in Italy and Corsica.  He worked for the Armstrong Corporation, Polaroid, and Digital, from where he retired in 1989.  George loved flying and for several years he flew his Piper Comanche out of Norwood Airport, where he was a member of the Norwood Airport Association.  In addition, he was a member of Orient Lodge AF & AM of Norwood, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Aleppo Temple Shrine of Wilmington, and of the Central Baptist Church of Jamestown, RI.  George is survvied by his wife of 64 years, Virginia L. (Peterson) Berglund; his three daughters, Susan Hanson, and her husband Warren of Exeter, NH, Martha Crane, and her husband Donald of Bedford, NH, and Jane Toll, and her husband Job of Jamestown, RI; his sister Barbara F. Goodwin of Bedford, NH; his six grandchildren, Scott and Keith Hanson, Christopher and Camille Crane, and Ben and Alice Toll; as well as two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Katelyn Hanson.  Private interment will be in New Westwood Cemetery in Westwood.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestwon, RI on Saturday, February 14th at 2 PM.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the New England Air Museum, 36 Perimeter Road, Bradley International Airport, Windsor Locks, CT, 06096

Linehan, Janet A.

Janet A. Linehan, a resident of Dedham for 52 years, died Thursday, January 8th, 2009 at Wingate at Needham Nursing Home in Needham, MA.  She was 81.  Janet was born in Boston, a daughter of the late John J. and Anna M. (Conway) Linehan.  She graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain and worked for Fay Insurance Company of Dedham for 15 years, and then for Dedham Insurance Agemncy in Dedham for 20 years until her retirement.  She was the sister of the late Eleanor Linehan and he late Margaet Kobar and is survived by her two sisters Paula Linehan and Dorothy Linehan, both of Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 11 AM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood followed by burial in Mount Benedict Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Casinelli, Louis

Louis Anthony Casinelli, a resident of Westwood for 40 years, and formerly of Roslindale, died Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood after a brief illness.  He was 97.  Louis was born March 4, 1911 in Boston, MA, a son of the late Henry and Concetta (Lani) Casinelli.  He served in the US Navy on the USS Earle as a quartermaster 2nd Class during World War Two.  He was a member of GCIU, the Graphic Communications International Union Local # 600, and worked as a Union Lithographer and Pressman for over 20 years until his retirement in 1976.  He was a member of the Westwood American Legion Post.  Louis was the husband of the late Edna Mae Waterhouse, who predeceased him in 2006, and the brother of the late Julius Casinelli, Matilda Butera, Joan Casinelli, and Josephine Picano.  He is survived by his children, Robert H. Casinelli of Westwood, and Jeanne M. Grant of Canton; his sister, Emily Massa of Stoneham; and his two grandchildren, Melissa and Jonathan Grant.  Visiting hours will be Sunday, January 11th from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street (Route 109), Westwood.  Relatives and friends will gather at the Funeral Home Monday at 8 AM and proceed to St. Denis Church, 157 Washington Street (Route 1A), Islington for his Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o clock.  Interment with Military Honors will follow in Vine Hills Cemetery, Plymouth.

Peterson, Doris

Doris Christine Peterson, a lifelong resident of Norwood, died Thursday, January 1st, 2009 at the Ellis Nursing Home, in Norwood.  She was 95.  Doris was born March 30, 1913 in Norwood, a daughter of the late Carl Victor and Emma (Anderson) Peterson.  She was the sister of the late Bertil Peterson, and the late Ellen Larson.  Doris worked as a secretary at Plympton Press in Norwood.  She is survived by two nieces, Susan Sullivan of Florida, and Sandra Johnson of Norwood, and her dear friend Patricia Foley of Norwood.  A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 at 10 AM at Highland Cemetery in Norwood.

Fredriksen, W. Sylvia

W. Sylvia Fredriksen, a longtime resident of Westwood, and formerly of Roslindale, died Monday, December 29th, 2008 at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a brief illness.  She was 90.  Sylvia was born in Boston on April 16, 1918, a daughter of the late Olaf Benjamin and Vendla (Matttson) Anderson.  She was the wife of the late Karl Johan Fredriksen .  Sylvia was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Dedham, a member of Three Crown Lodge of the Order of Vasa, and of the Viking Club, Stenkil Lodge of Braintree.  She is survived by her two sons, Karl O. Fredriksen of Foxboro, and Erik J. Fredriksen of Derry, New Hampshire; her four daughters, Vendla Margeson of Wareham, Martha Hanson of Gilford, New Hampshire, Linnea Richardson of Wrentham, and Karin Sullivan of Hingham; her sister Margot Johnson of Westwood; 21 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.  Visiting hours will be held Friday, January 2nd from 3-6 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood.  Sylvia’s funeral will be Saturday at 10 AM at the House of Prayer Lutheran Church, 916 Main Street (Route 228) Hingham.  Burial will be in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.  In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to the House of Prayer Lutheran Church, 916 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043 or to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 950 East St, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.
