Glennon, Alice M.

Alice Mary (Campbell) Glennon, of Westwood for 58 years, died Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Ellis Nursing Home in Norwood .  She was 86.  Alice was born May 22, 1922 in Somerville, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Colin and Catherine (Kelly) Campbell.  She graduated from St. Clements High School in Medford, Mass, and worked as a secretary for the Stanley Works Company in Needham for 10 years.  Alice was the wife of the late James M. Glennon and the sister of the late Theresa M. Hall.  She is survived by her two daughters, Gail Dovell, and her husband Paul, of Pembroke, MA, and Denise Stetson, and her husband David, of Loveland, Ohio; her sister, Catherine M. Shaw of Arlington; and four grandchildren, Matthew and Thomas Dovell, Meaghan Danzilo, and Michael Stetson.  Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, (Route 109), Westwood.  Relatives and friends will gather at the Funeral Home Tuesday at 8 AM and proceed to St. Denis Church, 157 Washington Street (Route 1A), Westwood for her Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o clock.  Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Roxbury.  Donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 would be appreciated.

Longval, Leo H.

Leo Henry Longval, of Westwood since 1998, and formerly a longtime resident of Dedham, died Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 at Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood after a long illness.  He was 83.  Leo was born March 11, 1925 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, a son of the late Canadian immigrants Henry and Diana (Bailey) Longval.  He graduated from Commerce High School in Boston and served in the US Navy during World War Two.  Leo worked as a firefighter for the Town of Brookline for 34 years until his retirement in 1989.  For many years he bowled with the St. Denis Bowling League at the Norwood Sports Center.  He was the husband of the late Mary T. (Gallagher) Longval, and the late Ann K. (DeMaio) Fogerty Longval.  He is survived by his daughter, Marybeth Harnish, and her husband Glenn, of Marshfield; his four sons, Kevin L., and his wife Sheila, of Westwood, Paul F., and his wife Joanne, of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, Mark J., and his wife Ping, of Wilmington, North Carolina, and Christopher, and his wife Lisa, of Easton; his brother, Norman Longval of Dedham; and his seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Kathryn and Mary Harnish, and Colin, Ryan, Monique, and Cerese Longval.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday March 1, 2009 from 2-5 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, (Route 109), Westwood.  Relatives and friends will gather at the Funeral Home Monday at 8 AM and proceed to St. Denis Church, 157 Washington Street (Route 1A), Westwood for his Mass of Christian Burial at 9 o clock.  Interment with military honors will follow in New Westwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to St Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, 1 Bridge Street, Suite 102A, Newton, MA, 02458 would be appreciated.

Sutton, Ellen V.

Ellen Victoria (Kenney) Sutton, a longtime resident of Roslindale, died Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.  She was 86.  Ellen was born October 12, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Joseph J. Kenney Jr. and Delia (Kilduff) Kenney.  During World War Two she worked as a civilian secretary for the US Army in Boston.  After the war she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked as a medical secretary in the emergency ward of Children’s Hospital in Boston for 20 years.  She enjoyed gardening in her spare time.  Ellen was the wife of the late James M. Sutton and the sister of the late Joseph J. Kenney Jr.  She is survived by her two sons, James M. Sutton Jr., and his wife Marie, of Roslindale, and Francis J. Sutton of Roslindale.  A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 2 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.  Private burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery, in Roslindale.

Gillis, Ida F.

Ida Frances (Keith) Gillis, of Dedham, formerly of Boston, died Feb 24th, 2009 at the Franklin Skilled Nursing Center in Franklin after a brief illness.  She was 99.  Ida was born in Wellesley, MA, a daughter of the late William M., and Alleyne M. (Jennings) Keith.  She worked as a secretary for the Order of Scottish Clans in Boston for over 20 years.  She was the wife of the late Paul David Gillis; and the sister of the late Mavis Keith and the late Merritt Keith.  She is survived by her brother Russell Keith of Yuma, Arizona, and several nieces and nephews.  Private burial of her ahses will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston.

Carvill, Katherine

Katherine Florence “Kay” Carvill, a resident of Westwood for 65 years, died Saturday, February 21st, 2009 at her home in Westwood.  She was 88.  Kay was born May 3, 1920 in Boston, Massachusetts, one of four children of Harry and Betty (Halum) Cohan.  She grew up in Dedham and graduated with the Class of 1940 from Dedham High School.  An industrious woman, Kay held many jobs including employment at Plymouth Rubber, the A&P Warehouse, as a cashier for Brockelman’s Market in Islington and it’s successor, The Farm Stand, and finally working for the Norfolk Answering Service.  In her younger years she enjoyed square dancing with the Do Si Do’s and the Crazy 8’s.  She was a member of Contentment Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and of the VFW Auxilliary.  She was an active member of the Islington Community Church, and after that church closed, of the First Baptist Church of Westwood, and she enjoyed singing in the choirs of both churches.  Kay was the wife of the late William J. “Bill” Carvill Jr., a retired Westwood Police Officer, and the mother of the late William G. “Billy” Carvill, and the sister of the late Richard Cohan, and the late Lloyd Cohan.  She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy A. Girard, and her husband Vincent, of Westwood; her son, Bradford L. Carvill, and his wife Karen, of Readville; her daughter-in-law Josephine Carvill of Readville; her sister, Dorothy Manning of California; and her grandchildren, Melissa, Bridget, and Richard Carvill, and Paul Girard.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service Wednesday, February 25th at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, 808 High Street, Westwood.  Private burial of Kay’s cremains will be held in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.  In lieu of flowers donations to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 or to VNA care Hospice, Development Office, 5 Federal Street, Danvers, MA 01923 would be appreciated.

Deegan, Joseph R.

Joseph Richard Deegan, a resident of Westwood since 1973, died Sunday, February 15th, 2009 at his home in Westwood.  He was 79.  Joe was born July 25, 1929 in Holden, West Virginia, a son of the late Jack Andrew and Mary (Stefanik) Deegan.  After high school he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Putnam and the USS Winston during the Korean war.  Joe went to trade school and became an electrician, first working as a union electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrican Workers, Local 103 in Boston, and later for Polaroid Corporation where he worked for 15 years until his retirement in 1988.  He was also a member of the Norwood Knights of Columbus.  Joe was the husband of the late Dorothy P. (Garrity) Deegan.  He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Deegan of Westwood, and Patricia Reise, and her husband Craig, of Norwood; his sister, Betty Petersen of Florida; and his two brothers, Edward Deegan, and his wife Ruth, of Wisconsin, and Thomas Deegan, and his wife Joyce, of Florida.  Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Feb 18th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, WESTWOOD.  Relatives and friends will gather at the Funeral Home, Thursday at 8:45 AM and proceed to Imacculate Conception Church, 122 Canton Street, Stoughton for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o clock. Burial with miliary honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.  Donations in his memory to Poor Clare Nuns, Monastary of St. Clare, 920 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 would be appreciated.

Wiik, Sylvia

Sylvia Irene (Niemi) Wiik, a resident of Norwood, died Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at her home in Norwood.  She was 91.  Sylvia was born November 27, 1917 in Walpole, MA, the daughter of the late Frank and Irene Amanda (Jarvinen) Niemi.  She graduated from Norwood High School with the Class of 1935 and worked as a receptionist for Holliston Mills in Norwood.  She was the wife of the late Urho Wiik and is survived by her two sons, Richard P. Wiik, and his wife Patricia, of Nashua, New Hampshire, and Ronald F. Wiik of Norwood; her two daughters, Irene S. Ingemi, and her husband Michael, of Norwood, and Barbara L. Brierley, and her husbnd David, of Norwood; and her five grandchildren, Brian Wiik, Paul and Amanda Ingemi, and Mark and Adam Brierley.  Visiting hours will be held Friday 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols Street, Norwood.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Saturday, February 21st at 10 AM at the First Congregational Church of Norwood.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Norwood.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Music Program at the First Congregational Church of Norwood, 100 Winter Street, Norwood, MA 02062 would be appreciated.

Butler, Florence

Florence Elizabeth Butler, a resident of West Roxbury for the past 40 years, and formerly of Dedham, died Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at the Faulkner Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.  She was 86.  Florence was born and raised in Dedham, a daughter of the late Joseph Arthur and Mary Hannah (Missler) Butler.  She was a graduate of Dedham High School.  Florence enjoyed craft work and sports, and she was an avid Red Sox fan.  She is survived by her two sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Clark, and Ruth D. Aitchison, both of West Roxbury, and was the loving aunt of Robin Clark of West Roxbury, Pamela Dluzneiski of Stoughton, Glenn Clark of Boston, John Aitchison of Florida, Pat Sexton of Auburn, and the late Kim Connor Clark and the late Thomas Aitchison.  She is also survived by many loving grandnieces and grandnephews.  Visiting hours will be held Monday, Feb 16, from 4-8  PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St, Dedham.  Florence’s funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at the Funeral Home, followed by burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Bond, Helen

Helen (Zukauskas) Bond, a longtime resident of Westwood, died Sunday, February 8th, 2009 at the Ellis Nursing Home in Norwood after a long illness.  She was 90.  Helen was born March 8, 1918 in South Boston, the daughter of the late Charles and Petrunie (Gasper) Zukauskas.  She was a graduate of Burdett College and worked as a bookeeper/secretary for Grossman Cap Company of Avon.  She was a member of the former Islington Community Church in Westwood.  Helen was the wife of the late Wilfred M. Bond, and the mother of the late Dr. Rodney W. Bond, MD.  A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Feb 10th, 2009 at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton, MA.

Ford, Doris

Doris May (Carlson) Ford, a resident of New Pond Village in Walpole for the past 9 years, and formerly of Westwood for 47 years, died Thursday, February 5th, 2009 at the Cape Cod Nursing Home in Buzzards Bay.  She was 89.  Doris was born April 29, 1919 in Winchester, MA a daughter of the late G. Herman and Hannah Josephine (Danielson) Carlson.  She graduated from Winchester High School  and worked as a soda jerk at Randall’s in Winchester where she met her future husband.  She retired in 1983 after 19 years as a secretary for Factory Mutual Insurance Company in Norwood.  Doris was active in handbell choirs, first at the First Baptist Church in Westwood, and later at New Pond Village in Walpole.  She was the wife of the late Donald Melrose Ford and the sister of the late Herman C. Carlson.  She is survived by her two sons, Stephen M. Ford of Onset, and Peter A. Ford of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; her sister, H. Virginia Janson of Winchester; her grandchildren, Heather Liolios, Jennifer Hayes, Brian Ford, Kirk C. FitzPatrick, and Jifka E. FitzPatrick; and 6 great grandchildren.  Visiting hours will be held Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 9 to 11 AM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 11 o clock.  Burial will be in New Westwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to the American Heart Association,  20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 would be appreciated.
