Stewart, Donald D. Sr.

Donald D. Stewart Sr., a resident of Westwood for over 30 years, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Caritas Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton unexpectedly.  He was 78.  Donald was born Jan 25, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of the late William and Ann (Campbell) Stewart.  He graduated from Arlington High School in Arlington, Massachusetts, and served as a master sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War.  Donald was the owner and operator of the Donald D. Stewart Auto Body and Repair Shop of Roxbury until his retirement in 2004.  He was a Past Master of St. John’s Lodge AF & AM of Boston, a member of Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Shriner’s Hospital in Boston.  He was the husband of the late Diana M. (Saba) Stewart, and is survived by his son, Donald D. Stewart Jr., and his wife Judith, of Franklin; his daughters, Denise J. Stewart of Norwood, and Natasha D. Stewart of Norwood; his brother, Barry Stewart of Westwood; his sisters, Shirley Stewart of Westwood, and Diane Stewart of Weymouth; and his grandchildren, Cole R., Olivia N., and Ava L. Stewart.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, April 28 from 6-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood.  Donald’s funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 AM at the funeral home followed by burial in New Westwood Cemetery with military honors.  Donations in Don’s memory to the Shriner’s Burns Hospital, 51 Blossom St, Boston, MA 02114 would be appreciated.

Lawson, Jessie I. (MacLennan)

 

Jessie I. (MacLennan) Lawson, a seventy year resident of Westwood, passed  away April 21st at the North Hill Nursing Home in Needham.  She was 96 years old. Jessie was born on September 15, 1912 in Boston, Mass. to Angus MacLennan of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada and Jessie Shand Fraser of Aberdeenshire Scotland.

Jessie returned to Cape Breton at one year old.  She spent her childhood on the family farm overlooking the Bras d’Or lakes and developed  an appreciation for nature and a deep love for all creatures. Sadly her mother died in childbirth when Jessie was eight and her father when she was sixteen.  Jessie returned to Boston in her late teens and met Charles Lawson  whose parents hailed from Edinburgh, Scotland.  They were married on August 4th, 1934.  She was a companion to wealthy Boston families.  Jessie was independent, devoted and very giving.  She enjoyed merriment, reading, PBS, gardening, bird watching and classical music.  Jessie was a very entertaining storyteller. She and Charlie had a deep respect and love for their Scottish heritage, the music and dance, and regularly attended the Highland gatherings in Cape Breton.  Jessie loved her family and her heart was always in Cape Breton.  Jessie is predeceased by three older half siblings, Annie Caine,  Rebecca Towns and Robert MacLennan.  Jessie was the eldest of  five full siblings.  William, Wallace, Norman and Helen.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews.  A graveside service will be held Tuesday,  April 28th, at 2:00PM at the Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Avenue, Boston, MA  02130.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the World Wildlife Fund, ATTN: Office of Gift Planning, 1250 24th Street  N.W., Washington, DC 20037.

Madge, Lorraine

Lorraine Elizabeth (Baer) Madge, a resident of Westwood since 1943, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at her home in Westwood after a long illness.  She was 81.  Lorraine was born May 28, 1927, a daughter of the late Henry and Charlotte Helen (Smith) Baer.  She graduated from Girls High School in Boston with the Class of 1944.  Lorraine was a den mother in Cub Scouts, Blue Birds and Campfire Girls while her children were active in those organizations.  She was also very active in her church, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Westwood, having served on the Vestry, the Altar Guild, and having taught in the Sunday School.  Lorraine was the mother of the late Bradley John Madge.  She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Madge; her three sons, Kirk Geoffrey Madge of Walpole, Randall Madge of Millis, and Craig Douglas Madge of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her three daughters, Heather Joyce Hansen of Lebanon, New Hampshire, Amy Elise Madge of Westwood, and Johanna Lorraine Madge of Medway; as well as thirteen grandchildren.  Visiting hours will be held Friday, April 24, from 5-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood.  A Funeral Service will be held Saturday at 10 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Avenue, Westwood followed by burial in New Westwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to St. Joseph Indian School, PO Box 100, Chamberlain, SD, 57325 or to St. Labre Indian School, Ashland, Montana 59004 would be appreciated.

Dewar, Jr. Lawrence M.

 

Lawrence M. Dewar, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday April 22, 2009 in Dedham, Massachusetts, he was 78.  Lawrence was the son of the late Lawrence M. Dewar and Thordis Spaulding of Dedham, Massachusetts.  After graduating from Dedham High School as part of the class of 1949, Larry served in the U.S. Navy for the next 4 years.  After leaving the service, Larry worked as a air traffic controller in New York, and then at the Burlington International Airport in South Burlington, Vermont.  Larry married Beverly Ruth Burke on April 21, 1955. Larry was a member of the Ethan Allen Lodge #72 AF & AM of Williston, Vermont.  In his spare time, he was a avid golfer.  Larry will be greatly missed by his family and friends.  Beverly predeceased Larry on May 3, 2007.   He is survived by his three children Karan Leigh Dewar of South Burlington, Vermont, William L. Dewar and his wife Karen of Shelburne, Vermont, and Janet Ruth Casto and her husband Rodney of Tampa, Florida.  His grandson Ryan Dewar, and step-grandchildren Nathan, Matthew and Brittany Lesage.  He is also survived by his sister, Natalie M. Dewar of Augusta, Maine.   He is predeceased by his parents Lawrence M. Dewar, Sr. and Thordis Dewar; his brother Robert R. Dewar, and his wife Carol; and his sister Laverne P. Glazier and her husband Calvin Glazier, Sr.   A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, April 29th at 11:00AM, at the First Congregational Church in Burlington, Vermont.  Interment will be held at the Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts at a later time.  Donations can be made in Larry’s memory to the American Cancer Society 121 Connor Way, Williston, VT 05495, or to the First Congregational Church 38 South Winooski Avenue, Burlington, Vermont 05403.

Weis, Deirdre

Deirdre (Hart) Weis, a resident of Westwood for the past 12 years, and formerly of West Roxbury, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at her home in Westwood after a long illness.  She was 50.  Deirdre was born October 14, 1958 in Glen Cove, New York, a daughter of Margaret (Fitzgibbon) and the late Joseph William Hart.  She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, New York and earned her Associate degree from Marymount College in Virginia.  She then attended American University in Washington DC.  Deirdre worked for Quick & Reilly in New York for many years and for Bear Stearns in Boston for two years.  She was a member of the Socialites Bowling League in Brockton for many years.  In addition to her mother, Deirdre is survived by her husband, James V. Weis; her twosons, Brian J. Weis and Christopher J. Weis, both of Westwood; two brothers, David Hart of Northampton, MA and Michael Hart of Larkspur, CA; her sister, Jacqueline Winston of New York City, NY; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Visiting hours will be Sunday from 3-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St, Westwood.  Relatives and friends will gather at the Funeral Home Monday at 9 AM and proceed to St. Denis Church, 157 Washington St., Westwood for her Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o clock.  Burial will be in New Westwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Jimmy Fund, c/o the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445 would be appreciated.

Gould, Jane

Jane Marie Gould,  of West Roxbury, and formerly of Abbeville, Alabama and Florida, died Friday, April 10th, 2009 at her sister’s home in West Roxbury after a brief illness.  She was 55.  Jane was born in Boston December 7, 1953, a daughter of the late Kenneth A., and Margaret G. (Marshall) Gould.  She worked for 18 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse in home health care.  Jane is survived by her two sisters, Deborah McElhinney of Walpole, and Mary F. Bucelewicz of West Roxbury; and her brother, Kenneth A. Gould of Long Beach, California.  A family funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 14th at 2:30 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood.  Interment will be private.

Oertel, Minna

Minna D. (Ehnes) Oertel,a resident of Westwood for over 50 years, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the Wingate at Needham Nursing Home in Needham.  She was 100.  Minna was born November 15, 1908 in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Christien and Louise (Schroeder) Ehnes.  She worked as a bookkeeper for the Haffenreffer Brewery in Jamaica Plain.  Minna was the wife of the late Carl Henry Oertel.  She is survived by her cousins, Elizabeth Ehnes of Chestnut Hill, MA and Carole Power of Alexandria, VA, and her friends Jane and Frank Sivacek of Medway, as well as nieces in Pennsylvania.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Saturday, April 11th at 11 AM at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 950 East Street, Dedham.  Burial will be Monday, April 13th at 9 AM in Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers donations to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 950 East Street, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.
