Witol, Madeline H.

Madeline Hilda “Maddie” (Abele) Witol, a resident of Roslindale for 50 years, died Friday, May 29th, 2009 at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton after a shortillness.  She was 84.  Madeline was born January 20, 1925 in Malden, Massachusetts, one of seven children of the late Wendell Phillip and Hilda (Miller) Abele.  She attended Malden High School.  She retired in 1986 after working for over 25 years as a reserve analyst for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Boston.  Madeline was a member of the Roslindale Villagers, and of the VFW Auxilliary.  She was an active member of the Roslindale Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, served as a Deaconess, and was a current member of the Board of Trustees.  She was also a former member of the Dr. Catherine Mabel Guild.  Maddie was the wife of the late Adolph O. “Archie” Witol, the mother of the late Jeffrey W. Witol, and the stepmother of the late Richard “Rick” Witol, and the late Charles “Chuck” Witol.  She is survived by her sister, Thelma Hardiman of West Roxbury; her grandchildren, Charlene M. Witol of Quincy, and Jeremiah Wallace of Hyannis; her great grandchildren, Charles and Daniel Doyle; her devoted daughter-in-law AnnMarie Wallace of Hyannis; and her stepson John “Jack” Witol of Florida.  Visiting hours will be held Monday,, June 1st from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.  Maddie’s funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 AM at the funeral home with the Reverend Lee Bodie, Pastor of the Roslindale Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Roslindale Baptist Church, 542 Cummins Highway, Roslindale, Ma 02131 would be appreciated.

Whisler, Diann M.

Diann Marie (Bastis) Whisler, a lifelong resident of Dedham, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood, MA.  She was 66.  Diann was born July 26, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only child of Walter Joseph, and Norma Edith (Collins) Bastis.  She graduated from Dedham High School with the class of 1960.  Diann is survived by her husband of 48 years, Lyle Earl Whisler; her son, Wayne W., and his wife Sheila Whisler of Dedham; her daughter, Donna M. Scott, and her husband Mark, of Roseburg, Oregon; and her three grandchildren, AnnMarie McNamara, Michael C. McNamara, and Stephen L. Whisler.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 6-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invited to gather Friday at 10 AM at the Folsom FuneralHome, and proceed to St. Susanna’s Church, Needham St., Dedham forher Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o clock.  Interment will follow in Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.

Hartshorn, Earle

Earle Colburn Hartshorn, a longtime resident of Norwood, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital after a brief illness.  He was 86.  Earle was born October 24, 1922 in Boston, a son of the late Earle C. and Mary (Thompson) Hartshorn.  He graduated from Norwood High School,served in the US Army during World War Two, and then worked as a machinist at Bird machine Company in Walpole for 30 years.  He was a member of the bay State Antique Auto Club, a member of the United Church of Norwood, and a member of Orient Lodge AF & AM of Norwood.  Earle was the husband of the late Ruth M. (Fonseca), and the brother of the late Lewis Hartshorn, Alice Cummerford, Marion Pratt, and Ruth Houghton.  Visiting hours will be held from noon to 1 PM Thursday at the May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols St., Norwood followed by a funeral service at the United Church of Norwood, 595 Washington St., Norwood at 1:30 PM.  Burial will be in Rural Cemetery in Walpole.  Donations to the Bay State Antique Auto Club, PO Box 486, Dedham, Ma 02027 would be appreciated.

Malpass, Harvey

Harvey Woodrow Malpass, a resident of Plainville for the past 5 years, and formerly of Norwood for 54 years died Monday, May 18th, 2009 at his home in Plainville after a long illness.  he was 86.  Harvey was born May 14, 1923 in Clinton, South Carolina, a son of the late John W. and Zena Malpass.  He served in the US Army during World War Two.  Harvey owned and operated service stations including a Texaco station on Mass Ave in Harvard Square, Cambridge, a Mobil station in Union Square in Allston, a Shell station in Brookline, and self service stations in Cambridge, Charlestown, and Somerville.  After his retirement he enjoyed driving school vans.  Harvey was the husband of the late Barbara (Ashley), and the late Barthena “Bertha”  (Sideropoulos), and the brother of the late Daniel, Harold, Clarence, and Clara Malpass.  He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Wozniak, and her husband Paul, of Pepperell; his brother, John W. Malpass of Portland, Oregon; his two step daughters, Penelope Santro, and her husband Louis “Woody” Santro, and Eleanor Lyons; his stepson, Artjur Gregory of Califonia; his two grandsons, Scott Rossi, and his wife Tracy, of Tyngsboro, and Jason Rossi, and his wife Amy, of Litchfield, New Hampshire; his two step grandchildren, Gregory Lyons, and Tracy Lyons, both of California; his three great grandchildren, Zak, Caitlyn, and Madie Rossi; his five nieces, Ruth Moody, Joyce LeCouter, Jo-Ann Staton, and Clara Smith, all of South Carolina, and Christy McCauly of Portland, Oregon; and his longtime companion, Jean Fennelly of Plainville.  Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 4-8 PM at the May Funeral Home, 85 Nichols Street, Norwood.  Harvey’s funeral will be held Thursday at 10 AM at the funeral home followed by burial with military honors at Highland Cemetery in Norwood.  In lieu of flowers donations to VistaCare Hospice Foundation, 690 Canton Street, Suite 220, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.

Dudas, Phyllis

Phyllis Elizabeth “Betty” (Chubbuck) Dudas, a resident of Dedham since 1950, died Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Milton Hospital in Milton, Massachusetts.  She was 87.  Betty was born November 30, 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Harry and Annetta (Mason) Chubbuck.  She worked as an administrator for Affiliated Nursing Homes, as a secretary for St. John’s Church in Jamaica Plain, and for 15 years as the administrator for the Wes-Rox Mental Health Center.Betty was the wife of the late Robert K. Stuhlmann and of the late John J. Dudas, and the sister of the late Harry Chubbuck.  She is survived by her son, the Reverend Robert K. Stuhlmann, and his wife Jean Guenther, of Stratford, CT; her two daughters, Janice E. Linsky of Dedham, and Joanne Saunders, and her husband David, of Tucson, AZ; her son-in-law, Jerrold Linsky; her eight grandchildren, Jay Kyle, Eric, and Callie Milewski, Genevieve Levin, Christopher and Emma Stuhlmann, and Jessie and Abigail Saunders; her two great grandchildren, Kade Milewski and Zoe Saunders; many beloved nieces and nephews including Nancy Copeland, Donna Casoni, Carol Ann Foley, and Harry Chubbuck; and her two dear friends, Marie Sprague and Alice Pollock.Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 6-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  A Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 11 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 62 Cedar St., Dedham.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers donations to the MSPCA, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130 or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Arnold, Kathryn

Kathryn Alice (Brasil) Arnold, a resident of Fox Hill Village in Westwood forthe past 13 years, and formerly of Great Falls, SC, Oak Ridge, TN, Rochester, NY, Hilton Head Island, SC, and Medfield, MA, died peacefully at her home in Westwood on Sunday, May 10, 2009.  She was 86.  Kathryn was born Nov 4, 1922 in Greenville, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Roy Eugene, and Lillian F. (Ray) Brasil.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Withrop Colle in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  She was the wife of the late William Arnold.  Kathryn is survived by her three children, William Arnold Jr., and his wife Patricia, of Pratt, West Virginia, Kenneth Arnold, and his wife Margaret, of Wrentham, MA, and Barbara J. Petherick, and her husband Kevin, of Knoxville, TN; her sister Peggy Peach, and her husband Daniel, of Great Falls, SC; eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  A Memorial Service will be held Friday, May 22, 2009 at 11 AM at the First Parish of Westwood United Church, 340 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA followed by a reception at Fox Hill Village, 10 Longwood Drive, Westwood, MA.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (www.JDRF.org) would be appreciated.

Larson, Sally

Sally Evelyn (Hanson) Larson, of Framingham, died Friday, May 8th, 2009 at the Wingate at Sudbury Nursing Home.  She was 80.  Sally was born March 18, 1929 in Westwood, MA, adaughter of the late Forrest W. and Blanche C. (Butkewich) Hanson.  Sally grew up in Dedham and graduated from Dedham High School with the class of 1946.  She met her husband, Norman Edgar Larson at Moseley’s Ballroomin Dedham and they were married in 1953.  Sally enjoyed designing and sewing her own clothing.  She also enjoyed going to Hampton Beach.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Kurt N. Larson of Framingham.  She was the sister of the late Forrest Hanson, and the late Dorothy Mae Foley.  Visiting hours were held Thursday, May 14th from 11-1 PM followed by a graveside sevice in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.  Donations in Sally’s memory to the Visiting Nurses Association, 209 West Central Street, Suite 313, Natick, MA 01760 or to Wingate at Sudbury, 136 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776 would be appreciated.

Valeri, Florence

Florence McHardy (Shewan) Valeri, of Raynham, and formerly a longtime resident of Hyde Park, died Thursday, May 14th at the Lifecare Center of Raynham.  She was 89.  Florence was born April 7, 1920 in Boston, a daughter of the late David and Christina (Cook) Shewan.  She was the wife of the late Daniel Valeri Sr., and the sister of the late David Shewan, and the late Margaret Thibedeau.  She is survived by her son, Daniel Valeri Jr., and his wife Ruth, of East Wareham, Florence Fegan, and her husband Albert, of Bellingham, and Deborah Anne Valeri of Raynham; her sister, Christina Wilson of Dedham; 5 grandsons, and 1 great grandson.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood.  Florence’s funeral will be Monday at 10 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Oakdale Square, Dedham followed by burial in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.  Donations in Florence’s memory to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701, or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 would be appreciated.

Rickard, Rollin W.

Rollin William “Rick” Rickard, a resident of Roslindale for 30 years, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton after a brief illness.  He was 65.  Rick was born September 14, 1942 in Mobile, Alabama, the son of William H., and Hazel Amelia (Smith) Rickard.  He graduated from Newman Preparatory School in 1965 and earned his bachelor’s degree in history and economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1970.  Rick served in the US Navy as a radarman 2ndclass during the Vietnam War.  He worked as a hospital administrator for both the Mass General Hospital and for the Eunice Shriver Medical Center in Boston.  He became Vice President of Shriver Clinical Service in Wakefield 15 years ago and worked there until 2008.  Rick is survived by his wife of 15 years, Penny Sue (Holmquist) Rickard; his two sons, Benjamin R. Rickard and Matthew H. Rickard; his sister Carmen R. Marcy of Ardmore, Pennsylvania; his nephew, Henry O. Marcy 5th; and his two nieces, Maribel M. Pregnall and Jennifer M. Archard.  Visitation with Rick’s family will be from 10-11 AM on Friday, May 15th, followed by a funeral service at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale at 11 o clock.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Boston.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Parkway Little League, PO Box 320152, West Roxbury, MA 02132 would be appreciated.

Contardo, Jillian

Jillian Nicole Contardo died unexpectedly May 10th at her home in Dedham.  She was 16.  Jillian was born in Newton and grew up in Dedham.  She was a sophmore at Dedham High School.  Jillian was a former 4H Club member in Walpole.  She was an accomplished Violinist and Musician, and a member of the Allin Church Youth Group.  And . . . . .she loved frogs.  She is survived by her mother, Toney Jo Hanson of Dedham; her father, Robert E. Contardo of Everett; three brothers, Nathan P. Hanson, and his wife Amanda, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Jon-David Hanson, and his partner Susie Peterka, of Dallas, Texas, and Jordan M. Hanson of Phoenix, Arizona; three sisters, Conley Jo Anderson, and her husband Nick, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Melissa Contardo of Dedham, and Tiffany Leahy of Everett; her maternal grandfather, Coleman J. Barry of Dedham; her dear friends Ashley Abraham of Dedham, and Jillian Montesano of Needham; as well as 2 nephews and a niece.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday, May 17th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham.  Jillian’s funeral will be held Monday at 11 AM at the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High St, Dedham followed by burial in Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury.  Donations in Jillian’s memory to the Allin Congregational Church, 683 High Street, Dedham, MA 02026 would be appreciated.
