McDonald, Virginia W.

Virginia Whitmore (Sullivan) McDonald, formerly of Hopkinton, Malden, and Florida, died Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Deutsches Altenheim in West Roxbury.  She was 82.  Virginia was born November 17, 1926 in Melrose, Massachusetts, a daughter of Joseph Jeremiah and Evelyn Josephine (Whitmore) Sullivan.  She graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1945.  Virginia worked for Filene’s in Boston for two years and then for Sears and Roebuck in Boston for 25 years.  She was the wife of the late Frederick McDonald who died in 1998.  She is survived by two sons, Edward G. Sullivan of Hanover, and Joseph A. Sullivan of New Hampshire; a daughter, Christine J. Milton of West Roxbury; a brother, Herbert A. Sullivan of Lynn; a sister, Geraldine N. Iverson of Sarasota, Florida; as well as 7 grandchildren and 8 great grand- children.  A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, September 2nd at 7 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Private interment will be in the Florida National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.  In lieu of flowers donations to Moose Charities, Attn MooseHeart, 155 South International Drive, Mooseheart, Illinois, 60539-1118 would be appreciated.

Heron, Grace

Grace Newhall (Hale) Heron, a resident of Stow for the past 19 years, and formerly of Lexington, died Friday, August 28th, 2009 at the Stanley Tippet House in Needham.  She was 89.  Grace was born February 6, 1920 in Ware, Massachusetts, a daughter of Charles Samuel and Helen (Wilson) Hale. She worked as the Office Manager for the Concord Recreation Department for over 10 years.  Grace was the wife of the late Raymond Adams Heron, and is survived by her two sons, Lee Heron of Stow, and Dana R. Heron of Marin County, California; her daughter, Ann B. Heron of Berkeley, California; and her sister Barbara Porter of California.  A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Stow Council on Aging, 380 Great Road, Stow, MA 01775-2127 would be appreciated.

Valentine, Marie A.

 

Marie Anna (Roberts) Valentine, a resident of Westwood since 1952, died Monday, August 31st at the Ellis Nursing Home in Norwood after a long illness.  She was 90.  Marie was born November 16, 1918 in Millis, Massachusetts, a daughter of William C., and Marie M. (Heller) Roberts. She worked at the Wrentham State School, as a kindergarten teacher for Mary Blasknek’s school in Westwood, as a waitress at the Bubbling Brook Restaurant in Westwood, and as a camp counsellor at Ocean Park during the 1970’s.  Marie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holden, and presently of the First Baptist Church of Westwood where  she taught Sunday School for more than a dozen years.  She also volunteered at Norwood Hospital for many years, and was a member of Contentment Chapter #184 of Westwood for over 50 years.  Marie was the wife of the late Louis C. Valentine, and the sister of the late Madeline Myers, Viola Roberts, and Roberta M. Clerici.  She is survived by her son, Louis C. Valentine, and his wife Linda, of Westwood; her sister, Ruth A Cross of Holden, Massachusetts; her four grandchildren, Paul Valentine, and his wife Jennie of Forestdale, Darren Valentine, and his wife Noreen, of Westwood, Brian Valentine, and his wife Debbie of Sandwich, and Leigha Valentine of Westwood; and her six great granchildren, Chelsey, Sam, Cameron, Cassie, Nicole and Amanda.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday 5-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood with an Eastern Star Service by Contentment Chapter #184 of Westwood at 7 o clock.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Wednesday at 10 AM at the First Baptist Church, Westwood followed by interment in New Westwood Cemetery, Westwood.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church, 808 High Street, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.

Johnson, Barbara E.

Barbara Ellen Johnson, a resident of Cambridge for the past 27 years, died Thursday, August 27th, 2009 at her home after a long illness.  She was 61.  Barbara was born October 4th, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only daughter of Gilbert H., and Priscilla C. “Pat” (James) Johnson.  She graduated from Westwood High School with the Class of 1965, earned her undergraduate degree from Oberlin College, and her PHD from Yale.  Barbara was one of the two Presidential Scholars from Massachusetts in 1965, and she was a world renown literary critic.  Ms Johnson was the author of several books including Defigurations du langage poetique, The Critical Difference, A World of Difference, The Wake of Deconstruction, The Feminist Difference, and her latest book, Persons and Things.  She was a Frederic Wertham Professor of Law and Psychiatry in Society at Harvard University where she taught for the past 25 years.  In addition to her mother Pat Johnson of Westwood, Ms Johnson is survived by her three brothers; Peter D. Johnson of Washington, DC, Bruce Pollack- Johnson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Christopher C. Johnson of Scituate.  A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 30th at 2 PM in the First Parish of Westwood United Church with the Reverend Christopher Dodge officiating.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Parish Church, 340 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.

Hoban, Gary Edward

Gary E. Hoban, a lifelong resident of Dedham, died suddenly at his home on Friday. He was 51. Gary  was born in Boston and attended Dedham High School. He served in the United States Navy and worked as an auto mechanic for Bill & Mike’s Automotive on East St. in Dedham for over 18 years.  Prior to that he also worked for Fontaine’s Towing Company for many years. He is survived by his mother Helen T. (Willett) Hoban of Dedham; his brothers and sisters, Laurie A. Shea and her husband Jim of Norwood, Michael T. Hoban of Newton, Kelly M Stoebel and her husband Jeff of Norwood , and Vinny Hoban and his wife Elaine of Dedham. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was the brother of the late Paul F. Hoban. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours Wednesday, 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 AM at the funeral home.  Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Southeastern Mass Motorcycle Survivors Fund, P.O. Scheffler, Robert W.

Robert W. Scheffler, a longtime resident of Dedham, passed away August 6th at his home. He was 81.  Robert was born on January 10, 1928 to Lester J. and Velma (Hollis), in Pascagoula, Mississippi with his two siblings.  After graduating high school, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  During that time he married Evelyn (Bliss).  The couple settled in Dedham, where they raised a family of 5 children.  He worked as a police officer on the Dedham Police Force, where he proudly served his town for 32 years.  During his career as a police officer, Robert attended Northeastern University, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  He was a past member of the American Legion in Dedham.  Robert is predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Bliss), and his parents Lester and Velma (Hollis).  He is survived by his children; Robert B. and his wife Joan of Dedham, Randy J. and his wife Leah of Foxboro, Sandra Ammidown, Janet Clinton and her husband Brian of Walpole, and Judy Cheney and her husband Paul of Hull.  He is also survived by his siblings Lester J. “LJ” Scheffler and Janet Thomas; as well as his 11 grandchildren, Chad, Monica, Emily, Erik, Dan, Laura, Amanda, Rob, Mark, Kyle, and Kayla.  Visiting hours will be held Monday, August 10th at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, DEDHAM.  Robert’s funeral will be Tuesday at 10 AM at the Folsom Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Brookdale Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Holmwood, Ronald T.

Ronald T. Holmwood of West Roxbury, MA, formerly of Wales Center and Buffalo, NY, died on July 30 with his family by his side.  He was 83.  Ron was the long time owner of El Snowshoes Restaurant at 1289 Big Tree Road in Wales Center.  A graduate of Kensington High School, he served in the quarter master corp of the U.S. Navy during WWII.   Owner of a number of restaurants in the Buffalo and Boston areas, he spent his retirement years pursuing a lifelong passion for travel to Mexico, refinishing furniture, golfing, taking care of his grandchildren and listening to the swing music of which he was so fond.  He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret “Marky” (Stockman) of 61 years; his two daughters, Debbie Holmwood and her husband John Mahoney of Norwood and Darlene Dowd and her husband Kevin of West Roxbury; his brother Donald Holmwood of Orchard Park, NY; and his  three loving  grandchildren Jack Mahoney, Ronald Holmwood Mahoney and Laura Dowd.  A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.  Burial will be private.
