Poor, Jacqueline

Jacqueline Lucille (Giguere) Poor, a resident of Norwood since 1997, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 peacefully at her home in Norwood, surrounded by her friends and family, after a three year battle with ovarian cancer.  She was 61.  Jackie was born March 15, 1948 in Worcester, Massachusetts, a daughter of Albert and Lucille (Gonyea) Giguere.  She was a native of Massachusetts but had lived in Delaware and Texas for many years.  She returned to Massachusetts in 1994 to live near her friends and family.  Jackie began her working career as an intensive care nurse at Beth Israel Hospital, and subsequently worked as an accountant and a quality control manager for General Electric.  She was a graduate of the nursing program at Quinsigamond College in Worcester and held a degree in accounting from Wesley College in Dover, Delaware.  Her generosity was evident in all aspects of her life, from mentoring colleagues to numerous philanthropic contributions.  She loved books, travel, her film group, the arts, animals, and cooking.  She will be dearly missed.  Jackie was the beloved mother of Tyler Poor of Norwood and Amy Poor of Seattle, Washington; the dear sister of Janice Williams of Loveland, Colorado, and Elaine Carroll of Newburyport; and the dear friend of Anne Settino of Westwood.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Memorial Service Wednesday, November 4th at 10:30 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 150 Chapel Street, Norwood.  Interment will be private.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, November 3rd from 5:30-8:30 PM at Jacqueline’s home.  Remembrances may be made to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, 330 Brookline Avenue (BR), Boston, MA 02215.  Please make checks payable to “BIDMC” and include “In memory of Jacqueline Poor/Dr. Konstantinopoulos” in the memo line.

Denekamp, Marjorie A.

Marjorie Ann Denekamp, a resident of Westwood, formerly of Sharon for over 47 years, died Thursday October 29, 2009 at the Charlwell House in Norwood. She was 86. Mrs. Denekamp was born in Boston and was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Sternberg) Madison. She graduated from Roslindale High School and was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 67 years John H. Denekamp of Westwood; her children, Jon B., and his wife Hope Denekamp of Wrentham, Robert J., and his wife Sandra Denekamp of Norwood; and her grandchildren, Laura Boothroyd, Jon Denekamp and Lynn Denekamp. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Derek and Jeremy Denekamp, and Larston and Nora Boothroyd. She was the sister of the late Robert Madison. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services Monday, November 2nd at 10 am at Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood. Burial in Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury. Tucker, Olive M.

 

 Olive Marie Tucker, a resident of Mansfield and former longtime resident of Sharon and Norwood, passed away on October 28th at the Epoch of Norton Nursing Home, she was 92.  Beloved sister of Phyllis Upham of Buzzards Bay; Olive is also survived by her nieces and nephews:  John Patterson of Danville, CA., N. Jeanne McLaughlin of North Easton, Richard P. Upham of Peabody, Leslie N. Fleming of North Attleboro, Susan Coelho of Taunton and Nancy Bagge of Raynham.  She is also survived by 16 great nieces and nephews and 14 great-grand nieces and nephews.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral MONDAY, November 2nd, at 10:30AM at the Grace Episcopal Church, 150 Chapel Street, NORWOOD.  Interment to follow at the Shepardville Cemetery in Plainville.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Grace Episcopal Church (address above) would be appreciated.

Borgman, George A.

George Allan Borgman, a resident of Westwood since 1985, died Monday, October 26th, 2009 at the Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Needham after a brief illness.  He was 81.  George was born January 22, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, the only child of Herman Francis and Martha Vivien (Wecker) Borgman.  He grew up in St. Louis and attended the St. Louis Institute of Music where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree, and Indiana University in Bloomington where he received his master’s degree in musicology.  George played saxaphone and clarinet with such big bands as the Larry Tice Orchestra (1946), the Jack Everett Orchestra (1946) and the Jack Stalcup Orchestra (1950).  He entered the US Army and was a part of the Army of Occupation from 1946 to 1948, playing clarinet in an army band in Heidelberg, Germany.  From 1953 to 1957 he worked as a high school band and chorus director; two years in Colorado, and two years in Nevada.  He married Janet Claire Ferroli, a Bostonian, on February 27, 1957.  In the Spring and Summer of 1957 Mr Borgman took a television production course at the School of Radio Technique in New York City.  He subsequently worked as a lighting assistant on the Drew Pearson and Quentin Reynolds TV documentaries, and also worked as a film editor in New York.  In 1958 he was a film editor and TV cameraman at KOMU, Missouri University’s commercial (NBC affiliate) TV station in Columbia. In September 1958 George rejoined the Army in order to get into the CounterIntelligence Corps.  After attending Intelligence School at Fort Holabird in Maryland he was assigned to a CIC unit in West Berlin.  During his army career he was a special agent in the CIC, Military Intelligence, and the Defense Investigative Service, working mostly in civilian clothes.  He spent almost ten years in West Germany, about five years in Washington DC, and a year in the Republic of Vietnam. He retired in September of 1979 as a Chief Warrant Officer.  George worked briefly as an investigator for the Wackenhut Corporation in the early 1980’s, and from 1981 to 1984 he worked for the Department of Defense as a personnel security specialist in Alexandria, Virginia.  He later worked for six years as a sportswriter for a group of suburban newspapers in the Boston area.  In 1988 he began writing stories for jazz periodicals, mostly about dixieland and ragtime, although he has also written about swing, big band, bebop, and modern jazz.  George was working on a band biography of the Casa Loma Orchestra when he died.  Mr. Borgman’s reviews of jazz recordings and books have appeared in such periodicals as the IAJRC Journal, Cadence, Joslin’s Jazz Journal, TJ Today, and since 1992, The Mississippi Rag, for which he wrote a monthly column entitled “Yankee Jazz Beat”.  He was a contributing editor that that paper until it went defunct earlier this year. He wrote numerous reviews, as well as in-depth articles on jazz and on musicians.  He was voted in the top 12 of jazz critics in a Jazz Beat poll.  George was a member of the Jazz Journalists Association, and has written liner notes for Stomp Off Records and various jazz recording artists.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 320 in Westwood.  In addition to his wife he is survived by  his two sons, Paul Allan, and his wife Cynthia C. Borgman, of Woodstock, Connecticut, and Eric Bruno Borgman, of Westwood; three grandchildren, Rebecca, Robert, and William Schnarr; and 5 great grandchildren.  He was the father of the late Carole Elaine Borgman, and the late Andrea Vivien Hancock.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday, October 29th from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St., Westwood.  Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home Friday at 9 AM and will proceed to St. Margaret Mary Church, 845 High St., Westwood for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o clock.  Burial will follow in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

Regier, E. Milton

Earl Milton Regier, a resident of Westwood since 1956, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at his home in Westwood after a brief illness.  He was 100.  Milton was born May 7, 1909 in Moundridge, Kansas, the only child of Peter Paul and Olive Edna (Smith) Regier.  He graduated from Moundridge High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Kansas State University, graduating with the class of 1931.  From 1932 to 1938 he worked as a technician with the Kansas State Highway Department, and then for 33 years as a regional sales manager and chemical engineer for Hurcules, Incorporated until his retirement in 1974.  Milton was a member of three fraternities at Kansas State University; the Steel Ring, Sigma Tau, and Phi Kappa Tau.  Milton has also been a member of Wichita Masonic Lodge #99 AF & AM, Aleppo Temple Shrine of Wilmington, Massachusetts, the First Baptist Church of Westwood, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Valley of Boston Scottish Rite, the Westwood Retired Men’s Club, and an honorary member of the Chemical Club of New England.  He was also a former member of the Braeburn Country Club in Newton where he enjoyed curling and golf.  Milton was a freshwater fisherman and especially liked fly fishing.  An avid sports enthusiast, he followed all Boston sports teams, but the Red Sox held a special spot in his heart, and he rarely missed a game on radio, which he preferred because of the commentators.  Milton also enjoyed gardening, both at his house in Westwood and at his summer cottage.  Milton was the husband of the late Mary Ford (Lippmann) to whom he was married for 65 years.  He is survived by his daughter, Jane C. Harrington, and her husband Jack, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and his granddaughter Erica Leigh (Harrington) Perkoski, and her husband Richard, of Smithfield, Rhode Island.  Private burial was in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church of Westwood.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church, 808 High Street, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.

Weafer, E. Louise

Eva Louise Weafer, 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 10, 2009 at Traditions of Dedham. She was born in Gardner, Kansas on December 2, 1920, the daughter of Edgar and Mary (Parker) White, and was raised in Olathe, Kansas. Mrs. Weafer graduated from Olathe High School in 1938. She met Lt. Donald Weafer when he was stationed at the Olathe Naval Air Station during World War II and they married on January 13, 1946. She bravely left Kansas to begin her own family in New England where she spent the rest of her life. Together with her husband they were avid travelers, they vacationed many a summer in Ocean Park, Maine, toured many parts of the world including Europe and China. Mrs. Weafer was an active volunteer in many organizations, most notabley at the Islington Community Church, where she served as Deaconess and with the Muscular Distrophy Association of Massachusetts, where she served as Treasurer. She loved people. It was her family that was the real center of her life and she liked nothing better than to entertain family and friends at her home in Westwood. Her Christmas gatherings of extended family and friends often numbered forty to fifty and were the highlight of many holiday seasons. She is survived by her husband of 63 years Donald F. Weafer of Dedham; her son Donald F. Weafer Jr and his wife Catherine of Brunswick, ME, a daughter, Patricia L. Weafer and her partner Richard Bourgelas of Millis; her grandsons  Richard Weafer and his wife Heather of Bath, ME, Donald F. Weafer III and his wife Sarah of Waterford, ME, James Hart IV and his wife Mary Ann of Berwick, ME,  her granddaughters Kimberly Weafer and her wife Tiffany Willis of Reading, Meghan Cranney and her husband Gregory of Auburn. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents the late Edgar and Mary White, ; her brother, the late Raymond White, her sister and brother-in-law  the late Elaine and Max Riffey. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2009 4-8 pm at Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St., Westwood. Blake, Ruth L.

 Ruth Lillian  Blake, a resiednt of West Roxbury, and Pompano Beach, Florida, and formerly of Oak Bluffs, died Friday, October 9th, 2009 at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Westborough.  She was 85.  Ruth was born in Boston July 24, 1924, the daughter of the late Alfred E and Henrietta W. (Anderson) Johnson. She graduated from the first class of Roslindale High School in 1941. Ruth married Harry R. Blake Jr  and, after WWII and the birth of their 2 children, they lived in Roslindale and West Roxbury until 1973 when they moved to Pompano Beach, Florida. During her winters in Florida the B.P.O.E, Women’s Auxiliary of Does kept her very busy with many service projects for the community.  She also enjoyed the time spent with visits from friends and family.  Mrs. Blake was employed with the Metropolitan District Commission for almost ten years. She sang for the West Roxbury Congregational Church Choir for many years.  Later in her life she lived in Oak Bluffs on their boat and worked at Our Market for 20 years. More recently Mrs. Blake lived in Marlboro at New Horizons Assisted Living and enjoyed her new friends and her life there. She is survived by her children  Elizabeth R. ” Betty”, and her husband Donald Call, of Stow, and Robert H., and his wife Nancy Blake, of Dennisport & Pompano Beach, FL; her brother William E. Johnson of Cotuit; her grandchildren Kristen Barnes of E. Brookfield, Susan Bell of S. Jordan, UT, Richard Blake of No. Attleboro, and Jill Crisafi of Wrentham.  She is also survived by ten great grandchildren. Ruth was the sister of the late Dorothy E. Mueller. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 11 am at Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Ave, Roslindale. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston. Robart, John

John Otto Robart, a resident of Roslindale for the past four years, and formerly a resident of West Roxbury for 62 years, died Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 at his apartment at the Sophia Snow House.  He was 98.  John was born June 20, 1911 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the youngest of the six children of Leonard and Anne (Ramsey) Robart.  He graduated from Rindge High School in Cambridge and worked as a bookbinder for the Riverside Press Division of Houghton Mifflin Company  for 42 years until his retirement in 1970.  He then worked as a maintenance man at the Children’s Hospital from 1970 to 1976.  John was the husband of the late Mary (Hopkins); the father of the late Jane Lee Wilson and the late Carol Lee Johnson; and the grandfather of he late Michael C. Johnson and the late John Heber Griffiths.  he is survived by his son, Dennis Robart of Rome, New York; his grandson, Danny E. Johnson of West Roxbury; his granddaughter, Brenda Griffiths of Arizona; and 5 great grandsons.  Visiting hours will be held Saturday, October 10th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.  John’s funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 PM at the Stratford Street United Church, 77 Stratford Street, West Roxbury, with the Reverend Catherine Michael officiating.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Stratford Street United Church, 77 Stratford Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132 would be appreciated.

Carver, Katherine M.

Katherine M. “Kay” (Dutton) Carver, a resident of Traditions in Dedham, and formerly of Westwood Glen in Westwood, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham.  She was 83.  Kay was born May 10, 1926 in Belfast, Maine, the only daughter of Harold and Edna (Trundry) Dutton.  She worked for many years as a cook at Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA.  Kay was the wife of the late Albert G. Carver who passed away in 1968, and the sister of the late Hervey and Harold Dutton.  She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Buechel of Winter Park, Florida; her son, Ralph, and his wife Gloria Carver, of Deland, Florida; her sister-in-law Anne Dutton; as well as nieces and nephews.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her graveside service Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 1:30 PM at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.  The Reverend Sheldon Keller of the First Baptist Church of Westwood, where Kay was a member, will officiate.

Ayan, Rose

Rose (DiModica) Ayan, a resident of Roslindale since 1929, died Thursday, October 1st, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Dedham.  She was 89.  Rose was born April 14, 1920 in Boston, a daughter of Charles and Emma (Spada) DiModica, immigrants from Italy.  She graduated from Roslindale High School with the Class of 1938.  She worked as a bookkeeper for Hart-Hanks Publishing Company, and was the manager of the Children’s Department of Park-Snows in Roslindale, from where she retired in 1958.  Rose was a longtime member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Roslindale where she served as the Assistant Financial Secretary for 26 years, a Sunday School Teacher, Cosmos member, Flower Committee Chair, Newsletter contributor and Church Historian.  She is survived by her husband, Albert J. Ayan; two sons, John Albert Ayan, and his wife Elayne, of Longmeadow, and Robert Charles Ayan, and his wife LeeAnna, of Wesley Chapel, Florida; her daughter, Carolyn Marie Moore of South Yarmouth; her brother Frank DiModica of Reddington Beach, Florida; as well as seven grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.  She was the sister of the late Zina Powell, the late Natalie DiFrancia, and the late Helen Griffin, and the mother-in-law of the late Harvey Moore.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, October 6th from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.  Rose’s Funeral will be Wednesday at 10 AM  at the funeral home followed by burial in Highland Cemetery in Norwood.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Endowment Fund of Bethany United Methodist Church, 100 Cummins Highway, Roslindale, MA 02131 would be apreciated.
