Billings, Naomi

Naomi (Atwood) Billings, a resident of South Dennis since 1976, and formerly of Westwood and Cambridge, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at the Eagle Pond Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Dennis.  She was 79.  Mrs Billings was born June 3, 1930 in Long Branch, New Jersey, the only child of William B., and Emma (Atterbeck) Atwood.  Naomi grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and graduated from Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School and then atended a year of art school.  She was an accomplished watercolor artist and crafter who especially enjoyed making Christmas ornaments.  Naomi was a talented figure skater and member of the Cambridge Skating Club who, during the 1960’s, taught figure skating at the Rocky Woods Reservation in Medfield.  After moving to South Dennis she became a member of Liberty Hall, she volunteered as a warden at the polls in South Dennis, and was a registrar in the Clerk’s office at the Town Hall in South Dennis during the 1980’s.  Naomi was the wife of 60 years of Roger Billings Jr.; the mother of Bruce G. Billings, and his wife Marcia, of Irvine, California, Scott W. Billings, and his fiance Calista, of Kingston, Massachusetts, and the late Roger Billings 3rd; and the grandmother of Jason R. Billings of Portland, Oregon, and Brent A. Billings of Oak Harbor, Washington.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Monday, March 1st at 2 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street, Westwood followed by burial in Old Westwood Cemetery.  Visitation with her family will be held from 1-2 PM prior to the funeral.

Feeney, Elizabeth “Betty” A.

Elizabeth A. Feeney, fondly known as Betty, died on Wednesday, February 24. She was 85. Betty was born in Boston and was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lillian (Roberts). She was a resident of Chestnut Hill. She grew up in Roslindale and was a graduate of Roslindale High School. Spending time with her family was very important to her. She liked to travel and socialize with friends. Fashion was always something she enjoyed. She worked for John Hancock Insurance Co. as a secretary before retirement. She was the loving aunt of Lisa McCann, Jackie, Bob, Tom, Peter, and Paul Shruhan. Sister-in-law to John Shruhan and sister of the late Mary Shruhan (Feeney). Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Saturday at 8 AM from the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM at St. Anne’s Church, 82 W. Milton St., Hyde Park. Interment will be in Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Visiting hours are on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

Wilson, Donald

Donald Bagge Wilson, a resident of Fort Pierce, FL and Westwood, Mass died suddenly Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Foxhill Village. He was 89. Former residencies included Concord and Boston. His wife of 67 years, Skip Wilson, passed away just six weeks earlier. Mr. Wilson was born in Winchester, the son of the late Albert Olof and Anita Bagge Wilson. He was a graduate of Harvard College in Cambridge, Class of 1942 and served as Lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II aboard the USS North Carolina. Mr. Wilson was President  of A. O. W ilson Corp., a family company in Cambridge which was founded by his Father in 1923.

Active as a volunteer for the museum he loved, Don was for many years a member of the Board of Directors of the Museum of Science, Boston. He was a member of Rotary Club International where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow for service to the community. Don Wilson also served as President of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and as a Trustee of Wentworth Institute of Boston. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Wentworth.

Don was an avid boater and gardener, especially at his former summer residence in Rhode Island where he served as Commodore of the Saunderstown Yacht Club. He and his family enjoyed his yearly catch from Narragansett Bay as a licensed lobsterman.

Don Wilson is survived by his children Susan King of Jamestown, RI, Amanda Curtin of Cambridge, Cynthia Wilson of the Netherlands, Christina Wilson of Cape Neddick, ME and Albert O. Wilson III of Breckenridge, CO. He is also survived by 7 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 59 Court St., Dedham, MA 02026.
All are Welcome.   The family will host coffee in the Parish hall immediately following the service. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Donald B. Wilson Fund c/o Museum of Science, Science Park, Boston, MA 02114.

Mahoney, Richard A. Jr.

Richard A. “Rick” Mahoney Jr, a lifelong resident of Dedham, died suddenly Monday, February 22, 2010. He was 33. Rick was a truck driver for F.W.  Russell Disposal Company for 12 years. He enjoyed fishing, model cars and tattoos. He is survived by his children Richard S., Sean P. and Bryanna L. Mahoney; his parents Richard A. Sr. and Darlene M. (Lovely) Mahoney of Dedham; his sister Dayna Mahoney of Dedham; and his partner Kerry A. Denehy of Dedham. He is also survived by his grandmothers, Ruth Lovely of Dedham and Ruth Mahoney of FL; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.  Rick was the brother of the late Ronnie A. Mahoney. Visiting hours will be held Sunday February 28, 2010 from 3-7 pm  at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham.. Funeral services Monday at 10 am at the funeral home.  Burial in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham. Wood, Elizabeth

Elizabeth Jane “Betsy” Wood, a resident of Westwood since 1968, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood.  She was 62.  Betsey was born November 28, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Harold Alexander and Marjorie Olivia (Clark) Forsyth.  She grew up in Canton, Massachusetts and graduated from Canton High School with the Class of 1964.  Betsy worked in data entry with the International Department of Faxon Corporation of Westwood for 20 years and then spent 8 more years working for Absolute Back Order Services in Foxboro.  She was a former member of the Advisory Board of Rainbow Girls, Norwood Assembly #8, and a member of Quinobequin Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Betsy owned horses for many years; she enjoyed camping in their motorhome, and spending time with her family.  She also liked sewing and crocheting.  Betsy is survived by her husband, Robert R. Wood; her children, Dawn Marie Gosselin of Somersworth, New Hampshire, and Scott R. Wood of Stoughton; her two grandchildren, Shadai and Hunter Gosselin; and her two brothers, William Forsyth of Zephyrhills, Florida, and James Forsyth of Canton.  Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, February 23 from 4-8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St., Westwood.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend Betsy’s funeral Wednesday at 10 AM at the First Baptist Church of Westwood.  Burial will follow in New Westwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Memorial Fund of the First Baptist Church, 808 High Street, Westwood, MA 02090 would be appreciated.

Shaw, Robert L.

Robert Lingarde Shaw, a resident of Dennisport for the past eight years, and formerly of Dedham, died Friday, February 19, 2010 peacefully at his home in Dennisport with his family by his side.  He was 88.  Robert was born April 6, 1921 in Dedham, a son of Thomas Preston and Gertrude (McCaslin) Shaw.  He graduated from Dedham High School and worked for over 50 years in the commercial glass business as a glazier and estimator for Shaw Glass Company and later for himself.  Robert was an avid skier and a member of the National Ski Patrol who enjoyed skiing at Snow Valley in Vermont, and at the Highlands in New Hampshire.  His other pleasures included sailing, walking the beach, and digging for clams on Cape Cod.  Robert was also a member of Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham which is now part of Eliot-Hyde Park Lodge.  Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife, Dawn Rae (Allen) Shaw; his four daughters, Lee Kivetz of Manhattan, New York, Lisa Ryall of Nashua, New Hampshire, Leslie Deschenes of North Attleboro, and Tracey Lynn Herterich of Medway; his sister, Sarah Hambuchen of Lodi, Ohio; as well as 11 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.  He was the brother of the late Fredric P. Shaw.  Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4-8 PM with a masonic service by Eliot-Hyde Park Lodge at 7 o clock at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Tuesday, February 22nd at 11 AM at the funeral home followed by burial in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.  The Reverend Michael Hodges of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Dedham will officiate.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Dennis Rescue Squad, 883 Main Street, West Dennis, MA 02670 would be appreciated.

Poirier, Rene F.

Mr. Rene “Pete” F. Poirier of Dedham died on February 15, 2010 of heart failure. He was 86. Pete was born in Fall River, MA and lived in Dedham since 1940. He worked as an electrician for the Penn Central, New Haven, and Conrail railrioads for 50 years and retired with Amtrak. Traveling to Cape Cod in the summer was a joy for him. Pete was a World War Two army veteran who served in Southern France and the Rhineland.  He was a member of IBEW, (the International Brothers of Electrical Workers), the VFW, Post 2017, the American Legion, Dedham, and two bowling teams, Dedham Men’s Club and Readville Seniors and loved bingo. Pete was loved by all who knew him for his caring and selflessness. He would always listen and offer a kind word to help you through a tough time; he never judged you, and always gave a free hug. Being very religious, he attended Mass every day of his life. God truly blessed him for all his good deeds.  He was the beloved husband of the late Emily (Hardy). He is survived by his children, Paul of Dedham, Lorraine Curran and her husband Frank of Walpole, Peter and Jan of Brockton, Helen Humes of Dedham, Loretta Rowe of Attleboro and Sandra Hitching and her husband Ed of Florida.  He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Friday at 10 AM from the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., Dedham followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 420 High St., Dedham. Interment in Brookdale Cemetery.  Visiting hours are on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9PM. Cataloni, Nancy E.

Nancy E. (Coleman) Cataloni, a resident of Dedham, passed away at her home on Friday, February 12th. She was 65.    Beloved daughter of the late Francis and Mary (Corballey) Coleman; Nancy is survived by her children, Dawn, and her husband Joseph, Caissie of Hyde Park, and Dana Cataloni of Dedham; and her former husband Ralph Cataloni.   She is also survived by her sisters: Louise McNealy of Derry, New Hampshire, Frances Grondine of Dracut, Elizabeth Jenkins of Quincy, and Barbara Reale of Concord, New Hampshire; as well as many nieces and nephews.   She is predeceased by her brother Joseph Coleman, and her sister Esther Makavich. Nancy married Ralph Cataloni in 1960.  The couple eventually settled in Dedham in the late 60’s, and had two children a son, Dana, and daughter, Dawn.  Nancy and her husband owned two print shops in Dedham: Copy Cat, and the Ez Copy Print Shop. Nancy will be remembered for her down-to-earth nature, and her great sense of humor.  Visiting hours will be held Sunday, February 21st from 2-5PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  A graveside service will be held, Monday, February 22nd at 11AM at New Calvary Cemetery, 800 Harvard Street, Mattapan, MA 02126.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Partners Hospice Development Office, 281 Winter Street, Suite 200, Waltham, MA 02451 would be appreciated.

Gibbs, Dorothy

Dorothy Marguerite (Dawson) Gibbs, a longtime resident of West Roxbury, died Thursday, January 28th, 2010 at the Beth Israel-Deaconness Medical Center in Boston after a brief illness.  She was 87.  Dorothy was born August 17, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only daughter of Joseph and Marguerite (Faust) Dawson.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Boston University in 1943 and her Masters degree in 1944 from Mannes Music College.  Dorothy earned her Masters degree in History from the Boston University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1969. In the late 1940’s she sang in leading roles for the New York Metropolitan Opera, sang at Carnegie Hall, and also sang at Tanglewood.  Dorothy later sang for many years in the renowned Trinity Church Choir in Boston.  Her opera performances include the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in New York in 1946, the role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in New York from 1949 to 1951, the role of Idamantes in the first US performance of Mozart’s Idomeneo preformed at the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood in 1947, and the role of Czypra in Johann Strauss’ Gypsy Baron at Carnegie Hall in 1948.  In addition she gave many solo performances in opera and Lieder concerts in New York between 1946 and 1952.  Dorothy was also a soloist at Central Synagogue in New York City from 1944 to 1952 and performed for the “Message of Israel” radio program from 1944 to 1951.  In later years she recalled the importance of music to the Jewish community during the war years and shortly thereafter, when many of the people she knew suffered the loss of their entire families.  Days before she died she likened the plight of the Boston Haitian community to that of her Jewish friends in New York in 1945.  In addition to the Trinity Church Choir, Dorothy performed with the Sarah Caldwell’s Opera Company in Boston, and at Temple Ohabei Shalom choir in Brookline, Massachusetts.  She taught Music Theory for 30 years at Massasoit Community College as well as European History.  She was a member of the Metropolitan Opera of New England Auditions Committee from 1990 until her death.  She was the wife of the late Dr. Raymond Weldon Gibbs and the sister of the late Richard Dawson.  Dorothy is survived by her son, Dr. Raymond W. Gibbs Jr., of Santa Cruz, California; her two daughters, Virginia Ross, and her husband Michael, of West Roxbury, and Janet Nicolos, and her husband Vassilios, of Westwood; and her five grandchildren, Jonathan and Melissa Ross, and Dimitri, Alexei, and Andreas Nicolos.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Saturday, February 6th at 11AM at All Saints Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Dorchester followed by burial in Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers donations to All Saints Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Dorchester, MA 02124 would be appreciated.
