Skarinka, Vitold C.

Vitold Carl Skarinka, a resident of Westwood for 55 years, died suddenly Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Mass General Hospital in Boston.  He was 89.  Vitold was born December 10, 1920 in Brockton, Massachusetts, one of the two children of Lithuanian immigrants Caroline (Rubinskas) and Adam Skarinka.  He grew up in Brockton and graduated from Brockton High School with the Class of 1938 where he was a member of the championship Brockton High School football team. He enrolled at St. Louis University, attending briefly, until he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps.  After his military service he attended and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston.  Mr Skarinka worked at the Mitre Corporation in Burlington and at the Foxboro Company.  He was a parishioner of St. Denis Church in Westwood, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a coach of Westwood little League.  He leaves his wife of 58 years, Helen V. (Oberlander) Skarinka; his daughter, Karen P. Raymond, and her husband Ron, of Dover; his son, Rick C. Skarinka, and his wife Peggy, of Concord, New Hampshire; and his grandchildren, Jeff, Kristen, Kaitlin, Christopher and Billy.  Vitold was the brother of the late Adam Skarinka and the brother-in-law of Jean Kent, and her husband John of Easton, Joy Oberlander of Dedham, and the late Barbara and George Winbourne.  He is survived by many nieces and nephews including his goddaughter Cherylann (Winbourne) Sheehan of Dedham.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High Street (Route 109), Westwood. Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home Friday at 9 AM and proceed to St. Denis Church, 157 Washington Street (Route 1A) in the Islington section of Westwood for his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 o clock.  Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Vitold’s memory to the MGH Cancer Center, 165 Cambridge St., Boston, MA 02114.
