Callihan, Hilda J.

Hilda Jane Callihan, 95, beloved wife of the late James Callihan, died on February 23, 2013 in Brookline. She was born October 9, 1917 in Diamond Cove, Newfoundland the daughter of fishing Captain Martin Collier and Mary Elizabeth (Munden) Collier. Growing up in a large family of 13 children, she learned the skills that would serve her well during her lifetime.

She immigrated to Boston and worked as a domestic before a long career in the lamp department of the Jordan Marsh Company.  Jim Callihan was serving under General S. Patton in the U.S. Third Army during World War II when they met and married.

Family was of utmost importance to her. Hilda is survived by two brothers: Martin Collier of Rose Blanche, NFLD and Russell S. Collier of Halifax, NS and two sisters: Ruth Ridgley of Tantallon, NS, and Lillian Hatcher of St. John’s, NFLD. She is also survived by an extensive family of adoring nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Hilda was a member of Contentment Chapter #104 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Dedham, Daughters of the Nile in Wakefield, Bon Accord Lodge #39 of the Daughters of Scotia in Burlington, and the Scottish Women’s Auxilliary of the Scotts Charitable Society.

Visiting hours will be on March 12th from 3:00 – 5:00 at Folsom’s Funeral Home, 63 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale.   A private interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Bourne beside her dearly beloved, Jim. A celebration of Hilda’s life is being planned for May.  Donations in Hilda’s memory to the Robert C. Patey Scholarship Fund, c/o Grand Lodge, 186 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02111 would be appreciated.
