Barr. Jeanne A.

Jeanne Algard Barr of Westwood, MA and formerly of Greenwich, CT passed away peacefully at her home on August 2, 2013.  Jeanne was married to the late Thomas A. Barr for 22 years.  She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Shaffer Atkins of Watertown, MA and Martha J. Shaffer and her husband, Joseph Nigro, of Duxbury, MA and two sons, Mark T.Shaffer and his wife Carol Core of San Luis Obispo, CA and David M. Shaffer of Old Greenwich, CT.  Jeanne also leaves four grandchildren, Nate, Aisha, Anson and Kyle, and two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Shawn.  In addition, she is survived by four step-children, Bill, Cindy, Susan and Steve and three step-grandchildren, Nick, Thomas and Sara.

Jeanne was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Lancaster, PA. She was a proud graduate of Smith College, Class of ’48.  Jeanne spent most of her adult life in Greenwich, where she worked as a Planner/Zoning Enforcement Officer for 25 years.  Upon her retirement in 1993, Jeanne was awarded the Town of Greenwich Seal for her dedication to the community.  In 2006, Jeanne and Tom moved to a retirement community, Fox Hill Village, in Westwood, MA where they built many new friendships.  Jeanne and Tom traveled extensively, were avid sports fans and enjoyed music and the arts.  Jeanne also enjoyed playing tennis and paddle tennis.  She was a fabulous mother and adored her extended family.  Jeanne will be remembered for her love of politics, honest directness, utmost integrity, strength and love of life.  Interment is private.  Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Smith College, 7 College Lane, Northampton, MA 01063 or made online at www.smith.edu.
