James J.McCabe, a resident of West Roxbury, and formerly of Dorchester, died Monday, February 3, 2014.  He was 85. Beloved and loving husband of Dorothy M. (Lonas)McCabe for 62 years. Devoted father of Michael J. McCabe of Roslindale, Janet O’Keefe and her husband Michael Billings of Millis, John R. McCabe and his wife Maureen of Westwood and Karen Kelley and her husband Scott of Walpole. Brother of John F. McCabe and his late wife Margaret of Winchester, Paula O’Loughlin and her late Husband Jack of Maryland and the late Robert McCabe and his late wife Sally. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Son of the late John F. and Margaret (Burns) McCabe. James was a retired District Fire Chief for the City of Boston Fire Department and was the last survivor of the Vendom Hotel Fire in Boston. He graduated from BC High School and then Bunker Hill Community College. Jimmy was a Boston Fire Fighter for 35 years and was Past Chairman for the Boston Firefighters Credit Union. James was an avid bowler with the Pins and Needles Bowling League and a member of the Dedham Retired Men’s Club. Visiting Hours Thursday, February 6 from 4-8 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St Dedham. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Friday February 7 at 10 AM and proceed to St Mary’s Church, 420 High St, Dedham for a Mass of Christian burial at 11 AM. Burial will be at Forest Hill’s Cemetery Boston. US Army WWII Veteran. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Holyoke, Ma. 01040.

    Bob and I are so very sorry for your loss. Jim was a wonderful man. He always had a joke and a kind word to say, even when I was just a kid.
