Ferdinand Joseph “Ferdy” Kern Jr., a resident of Dedham, died Monday, January 11, 2016 at the Charlwell Nursing Home in Norwood after a long illness.  He was 98. Ferdy was born June 21, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts, the only son of Alma Henrietta (Boetcher) and Ferdinand Joseph Kern Sr.  He worked as a foreman for Marine Optical Company in Jamaica Plain for 40 years until his retirement in 1979.  Ferdinand was the husband of the late Frances Delina (Wharton) Kern, and the brother of the late Alma Koreywo.  He is survived by his son, Alan J. Kern, and his wife Susan, of Mansfield; his two daughters, Elaine Marchese, and her husband Rocco, of Dedham, and Diane M. Rhynard, and her husband Brian, of Oakdale, Connecticut; his sister Rita Bean, of Marshfield; 9 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday, January 14th from 5 to 8 PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends will gather at the funeral home at 10 am on Friday, January 15th and proceed to St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 20 High Street, Dedham for his Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o clock. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Grove Street in West Roxbury.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472 or to the Juvenile Diabetes Association,  Dedham Street, 770 Canton, MA 02021 would be appreciated.

    my grandfather was a great guy he help alot of people. he did alot for the hole family . I am haveing a hard time with it but i know he IS in a good place with nana. HE miss HER alot every day HE love her a lots. i love him and miss him alot rip gandpa love wayne sandra and kids
