Provost, Dr. Pierre

Dr. Pierre Eusebe Provost IV, a longtime resident of Westwood, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009.  He was 72.  Pierre was born May 3, 1937 in Boston, MA, the only son of Dr. Pierre E. III, and Helen (Curtis) Provost.  He attended Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine and graduated from Cornell University in 1960.  After receiving his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine with the Class of 1964 he practiced otolaryngology at the Lahey Clinic in Boston.  From 1966 to 1968 Dr Provost served in the US Public Health Service under the auspice of the US Coast Guard as the Director of the Rosebud Indian Health Hospital on the Sioux Indian Reservation in Rosebud South Dakota.  He earned his honorable discharge with the rank of surgeon.  Dedicated to medical education, he served as Assistant Clinical Professor 0f Otolaryngology at the Boston University School of Medicine from 1973 to 1999.  In 1975 he joined ENT Specialists Inc. (Ear, nose and throat) in Dedham and Brockton, practicing otolaryngology and head and neck surgery until his retirement in 1999.  Dr. Provost was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery.  He was also elected to the Boston Surgical Society.  He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Massachusetts Medico-Legal Society, and he served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Commission on Medico-Legal Investigation from 1985 to 1990.  He also served as a Medical Examiner for District One in Norfolk County.  Pierre was a longstanding member of the Dedham Country and Polo Club, and the Norfolk Trout Club.  A man of many interests and pursuits, Pierre Provost had great love for his family and the out-of-doors, and he was deeply committed to the environment.  He was survived by his wife of 48 years, Lura McCready (Swift) Provost; his three sons, Pierre E. Provost V of Vancouver, Washington, N. Thomas Provost of Westwood, MA, and Paul R. Provost of New York City, New York; and two grandchildren, Amy and jane Provost. He was the brother of the late Marguerite Bragdon.  Visiting hours willl be held Sunday, June 7th from 4-8 PM at Dr Provost’s late home at 68 Milk Street in Westwood.  Milk Street will be closed to through traffic to allow for parking for those attending visiting hours.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Monday at 10 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield Avenue, Westwood.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Boston University School of Medicine, Office of Development, Professorship in Otolaryngology (2667-1), 72 East Concord Street, L-219, Boston, MA 02118 (www.bumc.bu.edu/meddevelopment)  or to the Atlantic Salmon Federation, PO Box 807, Calais, Maine 04619 (www.asf.ca) would be appreciated.

    Dear Lura and family,

    It is so sad to see the passing of an era in our lives. Pierre was a man of tremendous energy and driving interests. He was a genuine dynamo and will always be a major presence in our lives. Now he can take that long and peaceful rest. Our hearts go out to you.
