Robert “Sandy” H. Salander, of West Roxbury, and former resident of Dedham for 30+ years, passed away on Dec. 22, 2016 at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in West Roxbury, at the age of 85.  Sandy was born in Boston in May of 1931, and was the only child of Hilrey and Mabel (Jones) Salander.  In his high school years, he was an accomplished athlete, and won the National Championships in the four man rowing event.  He also enjoyed playing hockey and skiing, and later on in life, woodworking.  He married Jean B. Thomson in 1952 before heading into the Army in 1953, where he served in the Korean War for almost three years.  Sandy attended the Boston State College, which has since merged with UMass Boston, and worked as a Teacher in the Dedham Public schools for  39 years until his retirement in 1992.  He was the devoted husband of the late Jean B. (Thomson) Salander and the loving father of Linda J. Mastroianni and husband Phillip of NC, and Susan J. Salander and husband Ralph Caisse of Lancaster.  He was also the dear grandfather of Alexander J. and Sarah A. Mastroianni.  Sandy’s visiting hours will be held on Wednesday December 28th from 4:30-7:30PM at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton St., DEDHAM.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral at the funeral home on Thurs. at 12 PM, followed by interment at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.  In lieu of flowers, donation to American Parkinsons Disease Assoc., 72 E.
