John Oliver Leavitt Jr., a longtime resident of Dedham, died Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Norwood.  He was 94.  Jack was born October 25, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of John Oliver Sr. and Catherine Veronica (McNeil) Leavitt.  He worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad until, at 19 years old, Jack enlisted in the US Navy and served as a naval aviator until his honorable discharge in November of 1945.  He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve based out of the South Weymouth Naval Air Station until 1966 when he was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander.  Jack worked as a sheet metal worker for Union Local 17 of Boston until his retirement in 1984.  He was the husband, for 67 years, of the late Corrine B. (Zorn) Leavitt who predeceased him in 2014.  Jack was the father of John O. Leavitt III, and his wife Roberta, of New Hampshire, Stephen Leavitt of England, the late Bruce Leavitt, and his wife Kit, of Florida, and Carol Flaherty, and her husband Thomas, of Norwood; the brother of Paul Leavitt, and his wife Darlene, of Plymouth, and the late Betty Ranson, and her late husband Joe.  He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Visiting hours will be Thursday, May 10th from 4 to 7 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invite to gather at the funeral home Friday, May 11th starting at 9 o clock and proceed with us to St. Mary’s Church, 420 High Street, Dedham for Jack’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am.  Interment with military honors will follow at Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Disable American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45250 or online at www.dav.org would be appreciated.
