Schauerte, Donald H.

Donald Herbert Schauerte, a resident of Westwood for the past 23 years,, and formerly a resident of Dedham, died Monday, September 16, 2019 at his residence in Westwood.  he was 94.  Donald was born January 26, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of George Henry and Edith (Gray) Schauerte.  He attended Dedham High School and enlisted in the US Navy when he was only 17. Donald was on the first crew (called the plank owner) of the USS Alabama when it was newly commissioned. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class at the conclusion of World War Two.  Donald worked for several years as a police officer for the Dedham Police Department before changing careers and working for the shipping department of Boston Envelope Company in Dedham.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 18 in Dedham for 74 years.  Donald was the husband of the late Katherine (Savioli) and the brother of the late George Albert Schauerte.  He is survived by his brother, David R. Schauerte, and his wife Donna, of Sharon; and three nephews, Brian Schauerte of Florida, Rick Schauerte of Rhode Island, and Jim Schauerte of Vermont.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation from 9 to 10 am on Thursday, September 26, 2019 followed by his interment with military honors at the National Cemetery at Bourne at 11:30 am.  In lieu of flowers donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
