He died peacefully on Sunday, 18 January 2026, in Needham, at age 97. Formerly of
Westwood and Chatham, he is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elaine
(Henderson) Steeger. He also leaves behind his three children and daughter-in-law:
Dean and Katharine Steeger of Medfield, Carrie Steeger Campbell of Bowie, MD, and
Janet Steeger of Lebanon, CT. He will be greatly missed by his four granddaughters
and grandson-in-law: Casy Chehayl, Catherine Chehayl, Amelia and Ryan Warnock,
and Julia Steeger.
Born in Boston, he lived in Roslindale until he enlisted in the Army in 1946. He served
his country during the Korean War, and upon his return enrolled at Northeastern
University. While attending Northeastern, he was a member of the Huskies baseball and
hockey teams.
After graduation, he began his career in the Boston insurance industry with Boit, Dalton
& Church specializing in marine insurance. In 1963, he joined the firm of B. R.
Alexander & Co. as a principal and remained there until his retirement in 1998.
In 1956, he met and married the love of his life, Elaine. They moved to Westwood in
1965, where they raised their three children. Over the 52 years they lived in Westwood,
Charlie was active on the town's Finance Committee, Youth Hockey, Little League,
Rotary Club, and St. John's Episcopal Church. He also served on the Board of Directors
of the New England Home for Little Wanderers, the Dedham Institute for Savings, and
the C.H. Powell Company. He was also a Mason for over 60 years, belonging to the
Columbian Lodge.
Some of Charlie's happiest times were spent at their summer home in Chatham,
particularly when his granddaughters were visiting. He loved taking the girls out in his
boat, attending the Friday night band concerts, and going out for ice cream after a
cookout.
When not at the Cape, Charlie could be found at Wellesley Country Club, most often
with Elaine or his business partner and best friend, Bruce B. Alexander.
Charlie will always be remembered as a devoted family man, loyal friend, honest to a
fault, a man who treated everyone with respect, and who loved to laugh, particularly at
his own jokes.
Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Home for Little Wanderers, 72 E. Dedham St., Boston, MA 02118 or online at thehome.org would be appreciated.
