Daniel Grover Fitch

January 21, 1931 — April 29, 2025

Westwood

Daniel Grover Fitch passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham with his family at his side. He was 94 and died of complications following a broken hip. He was a resident of Fox Hill Village in Westwood, and Westport Point, Massachusetts. Dan was born January 21, 1931, in Washington, D.C., a son of John Douglass and Mary (Grover) Fitch. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Mercersburg Academy and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy from Williams College and a Master's Degree from the Stern School of Business at New York University. Dan served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer escort and was honorably discharged in September of 1967. Dan spent his career in banking with Marine Midland Bank in New York City. He retired from his position as Senior Credit Officer in 1990, after which he and his wife Carol spent many years traveling with family and friends. He enjoyed planting and harvesting his gardens at their summer home in Westport Point, Massachusetts, and skiing at Stratton Mountain, a sport that he learned later in life. His two greatest pleasures were spending time on the water, be it racing on Long Island Sound, sailing on Buzzards Bay, or cruising the oceans of the world, and summer family gatherings at Westport Point. Fittingly, he spent what would be his last days aboard a cruise ship whose itinerary included transiting the Panama Canal. Dan and Carol raised their family in Scarsdale, New York, where he served on the School Board, and the vestry of St. James The Less. He served as President of the Condo Association of his winter home at Stratton Mountain, in Vermont. His first retirement home was in Bristol, Rhode Island, where he served as Chair of the Finance Committee of his Condo Association. In 2014, Dan and Carol moved to Fox Hill Village, where he served on the Board of Directors. Dan and Carol had just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in April. Dan is survived by his three children, Grover Fitch of Westport, Connecticut, Kimberley Fitch of Carlisle, Massachusetts and Nancy Fitch of Acton, Massachusetts, as well as his daughter-in-law Monika Lazaro, and sons-in-law Bob Zogg and James Demeritt. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Isabelle and Sophie Demeritt, and Eva, William, and Charlie Fitch, known to them as Dapper and Abuelo; and his brother Alan Fitch of Woodside, California. He was the brother of the late Douglass Fitch. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation to the charity of their choice.
