Joseph Francis Sarto, a longtime resident of Dedham, died Thursday, January 29, 2026 at the All American Assisted Living Facility in Wrentham. He was 93. Joseph was born May 27, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts, the second youngest and last surviving of the fourteen children of George and Anna (Merlino) Sarto, immigrants from Italy. He graduated from Somerville High School. Joseph served for two years in the US Army being honorably discharged as a corporal in 1954. He worked for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, initially as a typesetter and then as the print newspaper industry evolved, he went back to school to become a computer operator. After he “retired” in 1999, Joseph then worked part time at the Dedham Hilton Fitness Center until he was in his mid-80’s. Joseph enjoyed a good game of cribbage and took special pride in his well-manicured lawn.

Joseph was the beloved husband of the late Ann Angelina (Alberto) Sarto, who predeceased him in June of 2023. He is survived by his four children, Joseph F. Sarto of Bristol, New Hampshire, Cheryl Welch, and her husband Chris, of Wrentham, Lauren S. Konieczny, and her husband Adam, of Franklin, and Alan G. Sarto, and his wife Susan, of Franklin; as well as 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, February 3rd from 4 to 7 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home Wednesday, Feb 4th starting at 9 am and proceed with us to St. Mary's Church, 420 High Street, Dedham for Joseph's Mass of Christian Burial at 10 'o clock. Interment with military honors will be at the National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:45 pm. Donations to the Ronald McDonald House, 2716 Marshall Court, Madison, WI 53705 would be appreciated.
