CANN, Richard G., of Westwood, passed away on February 5th. He was the beloved husband of the late Cristina I. Cann, with whom he shared over 50 years of deep, enduring love. Their journey together began in Ohio where they first met, before they were married in California.
Richard was a devoted and great father to his only son, Jay Cann. After relocating to Boston, the family started their life in an apartment in Cambridge, purchased their first multi-family home in Somerville, and lived in Brookline before finally settling in Westwood.
A Life of Adventure and Sport
Born and raised in England, Richard grew up on the pitch playing soccer and rugby. After moving to the United States, he continued his passion for rugby by refereeing. His son fondly remembers the "colorful" new words directed at his father during matches, only to watch Richard and the players share a friendly pint at the bar immediately afterward.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard was a dedicated member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He spent decades hiking, boating, and windsurfing, finding his greatest peace in the natural world.
Innovation and Artistry
Professionally, Richard was a pioneer in his field as the Owner and President of Grozier Technical Systems. He designed the first automated sound level management system based on the original 8088 DOS computer system. His "traffic light" invention—using red, yellow, and green lights—allowed concert mix pits to maintain legal sound compliance, ensuring the music played on within regulation.
In his retirement, Richard swapped technical systems for brushes and palettes. He became an accomplished watercolor painter, culminating in his later years with "First Place" and "Best in Show" honors at the Norwood Art Association Summer Extravaganza.
Family and Services
Richard is survived by his son, Jay Cann, and his wife Susan of Westwood; his cherished granddaughters, Christine and Caitlin Cann; and his brother, Joseph Cann of England. He was predeceased by his sister, the late Jane Cann.
