Walter James Sweetsir, know as "Buddy" to most people, died Saturday, June 20, 2026 at his home in Dedham surrounded by his loving family.  He was 80.  Buddy was born September 12, 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Walter Howard, and Caroline (Pollock) Sweetsir.  He graduated from Dedham High School with the Class of 1962 and shortly thereafter he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Vietnam War, being honorably discharged in 1968.  Buddy was the Postal Clerk at the East Dedham branch of the Post Office for many years and ran clothing and toy drives every year at Christmas.  After his retirement he worked as a crossing guard in Oakdale Square where he enjoyed entertaining his "kids" by wearing various head gear.  Buddy also enjoyed league bowling at the Norwood Sports Center and served as the treasurer of his league.  He is survived by his wife, Deborah Jean (Decoste) Sweetsir; his son, Walter R. Sweetsir, and his wife Susan, of Dedham; his daughters, Kimberly Curvin, and her husband Michael, of Dedham, and Melissa Eldridge, and her husband Jon, of Taunton; his brother, Robert Sweetsir (late wife Theresa), of Dedham; and his four sisters, Carol Perry (late husband Howard) of Dedham, Charlene Null, and her husband Tony, of Taunton, Christine Kelliher, and her husband Turk, of Brockton, Cheryl Scannell, and her husband Michael, of Dedham, and Cynthia Ceurvels, and her husband Glenn, of Derry, New Hampshire. Buddy was the proud grandfather of Michael and Brendan Curvin, Cody Sweetsir, Anne Marie Wigmore, Sean Eldridge, Alexandrea Sheppard, and Logan and Neal Eldridge; and the great grandfather of Bradley Eldridge and Nolan Wigmore.  Visiting hours will be held Thursday, June 25th from 4 to 8 pm at the Folsom Funeral Home, 87 Milton Street, Dedham.  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Friday at 11 am at the funeral home followed by interment with military honors in Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham.  Donations in Buddy's memory to the New England Center and Home for Veterans,17 Court Street, Boston, MA 02109 or online at NECHV.org would be appreciated.
